Snow is credited with possibly preventing serious injury in the first accident of 2018 worked by State Police stationed in LaSalle. State Police say that a 2015 Dodge Dart, driven by 30 year old Robert T. Weinert, of Worth, Illinois, was traveling eastbound around 8:30 am on January 1st on I-80 near Ottawa. Police say Weinert fell asleep, causing his car to leave the road, then the car overturned and ejected Weinert, throwing him 60 feet into a ditch. State Police say it was fortunate a thick blanket of snow was in the ditch, otherwise, Weinert likely could have been killed. Police say Weinert was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, and he was cited for improper lane usage and failure to wear a seat belt.
State Police is reminding motorists to stay alert when operating a vehicle, and wear a safety belt.
