Deer Harvest Down Locally

By: Bernard Spragg. NZ

The number of deer harvested by hunters declined locally this past season, though statewide deer harvest numbers are up.  Statewide, 147,000 deer were killed in all of the 2017-2018 archery and firearm seasons, three thousand more deer than were harvested in the 2016-2017 season.  Locally, in Bureau, Putnam, and LaSalle Counties, 3,859 deer were killed, a decline of 4% from the 2016-2017 season.
The number of deer killed by youth hunters declined dramatically both statewide and locally.  In the 3 day youth deer season, 2,372 deer were harvested this past season, a decline of nearly 30 percent.  Locally, 45 deer were harvested in the youth season, a decline of 34 percent.
